Clean + Maintain Your AC!

A household chore we often forget is tending to the conditioning unit. Today we're sharing a few tips to help you clean + maintain your AC throughout the year.

Change Filters

Cleaning and changing your filters is the #1 thing you should be sure to do to ensure your air conditioning unit is running at it's best.

Central AC Units

Check the filter every 30-60 days to see if its dirty or dusty. We recommend sticking with pleated filters as they trap dust more efficiently.

Open your unit according to the manufacturer's instructions and remove the filter to clean every two weeks. Simply dust off the filter and rinse it with lukewarm soapy water. Let the filter dry completely before placing back in the unit.

Clean Coils

The coils in your unit help move the hot and cold air so it's important to check that they aren't being clogged with dirt or dust.

Central AC Units

Check your unit for any dirt, grass, or other debris blocking the exterior fins. Turn off your unit and CAREFULLY spray it down with a hose. It's important to not get the electrical box wet & to let the unit dry completely before turning it on.

Window | Wall-Mounted | Portable AC

Open your unit to see the coils inside and brush away any dirt with a soft brush or cloth. Clean away any additional dirt with a spray bottle filled with soapy water. If debris is hard to remove, try using a mild detergent or dish soap.

Don't Block Your Unit

Airflow is important for your cooling systems, so be sure they aren't blocked by furniture or clothing.

Common Problems to Check For:

Weak airflow

Icy coils

These indicate either a blockage or clogged filter. Leaks in a central air conditioner could also suggest its pumps and tubes might be damaged or blocked, which means it's time to call a professional.

We hope this helps prolong the life of your AC & keeps you cool through the Summer. Need some help? Add this to your metro's other woman® chaos coordinator's to-do list!
